Chairman, House Services and Welfare Committee and frontline speakership aspirant for the incoming 8th Assembly, #House of Representatives, Yakubu #Dogara has written newly elected members seeking their votes prelude to the 8th House inauguration and elections scheduled for June 8.
In the letter titled “A chance to consolidate” dated June 1, 2015, Dogara called on newly elected members to “consolidate” on the achievement of the outgoing 7th Assembly led by former Speaker, #Aminu Waziri Tambuwal by voting for him.
The letter read in part: “There is no doubt that the 7th Assembly under the able leadership of Rt. #Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal CFR, has left an indelible mark in the annals of political history of Nigeria as one parliament that stood with the Nigerian people and helped bring about the change the country so desired.
“The House has charted a course for itself, of being independent and devoid of any external interferences, but this was only achieved after members defied the powers that be and overwhelmingly voted for leadership of their choice on June 6, 2011.
“Now, a new dawn is here, history beckons, our destiny is in our hands; here comes a chance to either continue on this noble path of making hard choices, not easy ones, thereby freeing ourselves and the institution we cherish from internal and external shackles.
“As members of the 8th Assembly, we have a golden opportunity in our hands to consolidate on the numerous achievements of the 7th House, especially as it concerns the independence of the House of the Nigerian people. This is the only way by which we can secure the destinies of our constituents who have invested their confidence in us.
“I therefore, wish to humbly present myself to you as a candidate for election into the office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. I am #Hon. Yakubu Dogara, #member representing Bogoro/Dass/Tafawa-Balewa Federal Constituency of #Bauchi State.
Meanwhile, Dogara may have picked #Hon. Lasun Yussuf as his deputy, it was learnt yesterday.
A member of the 8th Assembly Consolidation Group which has been campaigning for the speakership candidature of Dogara (Bauchi/#APC) made the disclosure.
“The candidature of the #Hon. Lasun for the deputy speaker is to balance the equation and to give room for federal character principle since he comes from south West.
“The group believes that the competence of Hon. #Lasun who is equally an APC member from #Osun State would go a long way in helping to stabilise the 8th assembly.” the member who asked not to be named stated.
Lasun who joined the race last week was said to have conceded to step down for Dogara and in view of this development the group decided to pick him to be the deputy to Dogara.
Lasun, a muslim may split votes from the South West region. Recall that the Minority Leader, Femi Gbajabiamila (#Lagos/APC) is another frontline speakership candidate.
